Hospitality Management Degree

Working in a culinary field doesn't have to mean being stuck in a kitchen. If you are good at planning, organizing, supervising and love working with people, perhaps a hospitality management degree is for you.

Hospitality Management Job Description

Hospitality Management Degree

Hospitality management entails working in any type of hotel environment, whether it be a bed and breakfast, casino, resort, campground, youth hostel or a large hotel chain. Your responsibilities are essentially to keep your guests happy and make their stay easy and enjoyable, while supervising the staff and ensuring the quality of service they are giving. You need to be able to have good communication skills as you will be greeting guests on a regular basis, but you also need to balance that with the fact that you are running a business and need to know everything that is going on at all times.

Getting Your Degree In Hospitality Management

It is standard for someone attending hospitality management schools to go for their bachelors degree, as this is the most required degree to enter the field, however, more and more people are going even further and getting their masters degrees. The reason for this is that master's degree holders will have more business experience, and be able to handle a supervisory role better. Most degree programs are about 3-5 years, with about half of that being a paid internship. You can also get your associates degree in hospitality management in 2 years, but it is usually a stepping stone to then go for your bachelors.

College Curriculum

Courses found in a hospitality management degree mostly include training in general business management, like accounting, human resources, communication and marketing, and then hospitality related classes like food service, laws and ethics and public relations for the hotel. The curriculum offered at hospitality management colleges is a combination of these two domains because your tasks may differ according to the size of establishment you work at. At larger hotels you will probably focus on one set of tasks, while at smaller places, you might be handling every aspect of the job.

Hospitality Management Online

If you don't have the time to attend courses to get your diploma, you can do hospitality management online. With distance programs like Kaplan University, the University of Phoenix or Columbia Southern University, you can get an associates, bachelors or masters degree online.

With a hospitality management degree there are many different jobs available to you in a variety of sectors that will be both challenging and rewarding. If you want to combine your management with your people skills, enter this career today.
