Restaurant Management Degree

There are many people who would love to work in a restaurant environment but who have no talent for the kitchen. If you are business minded and want to combine those skills with the hospitality, patience and challenge required of you in a restaurant, you should consider looking into your restaurant management degree. With this degree you have the chance to enter a culinary field and be in charge in a fast paced world.

Job Description

A restaurant manager has different responsibilities according to what kind of establishment you are working in. Your daily jobs would generally include supervising the kitchen and dining room, creating the menu, ordering supplies and equipment, maintaining strong customer relations, making sure all repairs are made, and taking care of all human resource aspects, like hiring, firing and evaluations.

Restaurant Management Degree

It is a fast paced position that requires a combination of different skills; skills that are partially natural and partially to be acquired at restaurant management schools.

Restaurant Management Training

The restaurant management training you need to find work in the industry can come in either a 2 year associate's degree program or a 4 year bachelor's degree. You can start out with a 2 year associate's degree in culinary management, but it will only get you an entry level managerial position.

It is generally required that you have a bachelor's degree; either in restaurant and food service management or a bachelor of science in hotel, restaurant and institutional management.

Restaurant Management Online

These days you can even study for restaurant management online with bachelor completion courses. This course is designed for people who already have an associate's degree in culinary arts and want to upgrade to a restaurant management degree.

You cannot learn to cook online, but you can take a class in business management. The program will teach about accounting, human resources, business law and ethics, computer science, hospitality, marketing, customer service and communication. You will do your training as a combination of theory in the classroom with an internship to provide hands on experience.

The key is to form strong leadership and people skills, as you will need them both for this job. There is generally no prerequisite for these programs as most you can enter with simply a high school diploma.

Future Careers

With a restaurant management degree, there are many careers available to you in the food and beverage industry. You can find work in any environment where food is served, from a restaurant to a cafe to a hotel or casino. Your duties will differ in each place, but your skills will support each environment. They are all challenging, but at the end of the day, you will feel like you accomplished something.
